Who is My Neighbor? (Love Your Neighbor – Step#3)

…he asked Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbor?’” ― Luke 10:29 NIV

Isn’t it fascinating that this seemingly simple question was asked to Jesus? But it is one that did not have a quick response. The answer given is widely known as the Parable of the Good Samaritan by Christians and non-Christians alike. If you are unfamiliar with the story, read Luke 10:25-37 NIV.

While researching this parable, I was intrigued by what I discovered:
• Both the priest & Levite were the same “countrymen” (Jewish) as the man who was attacked.
• At that time, Samaritans were hated by Jews and viewed as a mixed race.

So Jesus tells us this story about a Jewish man who is robbed, beaten up, & left for dead. Two of his countrymen pass by but do nothing to assist him. Whereas an enemy of this man who would be the least likely person to help, had compassion, and took care of him physically & financially.

Now comes the best part… Jesus asks the question,Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers? The response was, “The one who had mercy on him.”

The answer did not include location, nationality, friendship, religion, or anything else; only one thing, mercy.

Then the final but most critical reply came from Jesus was,Go and do likewise.”

Jesus has given us a directive to “go” and show mercy (compassion, kindness) to others. So, as we continue along our Love walk, I pray that we have this same mindset as William Penn:

I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again.
