Humility (Love Your Neighbor – Step#3)

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.” ― C.S. Lewis

Recently, we talked about putting on lovethat binds several crucial virtues we need to dress in daily. They are essential in our desire to demonstrate unity by loving our neighbor So far, we’ve discussed compassion and kindness, so let’s address the next one, Humility.

What is humility?  The Merriam-Webster dictionary definition is “freedom from pride or arrogance.”

The best definition is in Philippians 2: 3-4 TPT, “Be free from pride-filled opinions, for they will only harm your cherished unity. Don’t allow self-promotion to hide in your hearts, but in authentic humility put others first and view others as more important than yourselves Abandon every display of selfishness. Possess a greater concern for what matters to others instead of your own interests.”

Did you notice that pride can damage unity?  So, let’s kick it and selfishness out of our lives by treating others as being more significant than ourselves.

How do we go about this?  “Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all the care, kindness and understanding you can muster, and do so with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again.”  ― Og Mandino

As we continue on this Love Walk, I pray that each of us will daily “put on love” and follow the advice in 1 Peter 5:5 as you get dressed, “…All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’”
