“Gold medals aren’t really made of gold. They’re made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.” – Dan Gable
This post is the last entry in a mini-series discussing some similarities between the Olympics and our Christian walk. Previously, we talked about The Trials, The Training, and The Fight, which leads us to the final topic, the win.
The goal of every athlete is to win their given competition. By the time they have reached the Olympic level, they have continually faced adversity, made sacrifices, and fought to overcome every obstacle that arose. And as they line up to compete in that ultimate test, they are prepared to give their ALL to win. If they win, their reward is to be known as the ‘best’ athlete in the world (in their given discipline) and receive a medal.
As a Christian, our goal is to win the race God has set before us. It will not be easy. We will also encounter difficulties, make sacrifices, and fight to defeat each problem. So, why do we give our ALL to win? Philippians 3:14 (NLT) says, “I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”
My prayer is that each of us will endure and win our race. Then we can say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8 NIV
