“A champion is someone who gets up when he can’t.” – Jack Dempsey
This post is the last entry in a Winter Olympics mini-series about similarities between the Olympics and our Christian walk. Last year, during the Summer games, the topics were: The Trials, The Training, The Fight, & The Win. During these Winter games, the first post was Stay Focused and this one is, Keep Going.
When watching the Olympics, I’m always amazed at how effortless our athletes make their sport seem. Just seeing how fast they fly around curves, how high they soar in the sky, or mastering a jump, is astonishing.
I know their skills are attributed to hard work, hours of repetitive practicing & training, and sheer determination. Yet, they have numerous falls, crashes, & injuries before achieving a successful completion. Through their exhaustion and pain, they keep going:
- “You take a crash, you get back up and next time you succeed and that’s a great feeling.” — Shaun White
- “No matter the circumstances you may be going through, just push through it.” — Ray Lewis
- “For me to get through the toughest periods in my life, I had to look within to find the energy to do it. I don’t give up. Never have. Never will.” — Jonah Lomu
We all face difficulties in life that are exhausting. Just like the athletes, we must push through to keep going. In order to do that, we need to depend on God to strengthen us. We are promised this in Isaiah 40:29-31 ISV, “He’s the one who gives might to the faint, renewing strength for the powerless. Even boys grow tired and weary, and young men collapse and fall, but those who keep waiting for the Lord will renew their strength. Then they’ll soar on wings like eagles; they’ll run and not grow weary; they’ll walk and not grow tired.”
So, let’s trust the Lord for His strength and we’ll even be able to soar like an Olympian! Just keep going!
