“My thoughts before a big race are usually pretty simple. I tell myself: Get out of the blocks, run your race, stay relaxed. If you run your race, you’ll win… channel your energy. Focus.” – Carl Lewis
Yes! It’s that time again… The winter Olympics are about to begin, and I am very excited. Last July, during the Summer games, we discussed some similarities between the Olympics and our walk as a Christian: The Trials, The Training, The Fight, and The Win.
This month, I’m adding two more topics: Stay Focused and Keep Going. Let’s begin with Stay Focused.
One of my favorite events is Figure Skating. I enjoyed watching it so much that I took lessons when I was younger. It was fun learning how to spin. As beginners, we were taught to focus on a specific item in the rink to help prevent dizziness. Being dizzy can lead to being unstable and possibly falling.
To prevent an unsteady life, we need to stay focused on Jesus every day. We are told in Hebrew 12:2 GNT, “Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from beginning to end….”
No matter what challenges we face, we can be certain that our Lord is there to help us. We are assured of this in Psalm 91:14-15 ISV, “Because he has focused his love on me, I will deliver him. I will protect him because he knows my name. When he calls out to me, I will answer him. I will be with him in his distress. I will deliver him, and I will honor him.” That is a fantastic promise!
I pray the words from Herm Edwards will encourage you to keep your eyes on the Lord, “Stay focused. Your start does not determine how you’re going to finish.”
