“To be joyful is a principle. It doesn’t change with emotions. Joy is an inner contentment despite all the circumstances.” ― Richard Daly
This quote indicates that having joy is a standard and can translate into being a lifestyle, which we discussed recently. It becomes so engrained in our attitude that each day, no matter what happens, we are content.
We see this mindset in Habakkuk 3:17-18 (NLT), “Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!”
Although it doesn’t matter whether our day is challenging, going great, or okay, we should maintain our inner gladness. Paul gives us an example of this in Philippians 4:11-12 (TLB), “… I have learned how to get along happily whether I have much or little. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of contentment in every situation, whether it be a full stomach or hunger, plenty or want.”
M. Ahlers provides additional insight regarding this, “Joy is a choice based on being content regardless of circumstances. Understanding what encourages joy in your life can help you cultivate it and build up your resources for when circumstances are difficult.”
The last three posts have navigated us to this point: Joy is a Choice; if we choose it daily, it becomes our Lifestyle and should be displayed when we start each day (Rejoice in Today). And this leads us to a life of joy and contentment.
Please join me next time as we continue to “focus on joy.”
