#3 – Wisdom is… (Live Wisely)

Wisdom is the reward you get for a lifetime of listening when you’d have preferred to talk.” –  Doug Larson

Let’s continue our journey to learn what “wisdom is” by looking at another one of its definitions in James 3:17 (TLB).  In the last post, we discussed, “…Then it is peace-loving and courteous...” The third description states,

It allows discussion and is willing to yield to others;

These characteristics of wisdom directly address our conversations and being able to both listen and respond to others as God would have us.  We are advised in James 1:19 (AMP), “…Let everyone be quick to hear [be a careful, thoughtful listener], slow to speak [a speaker of carefully chosen words and], slow to anger [patient, reflective, forgiving];”

By applying these keys, we can surrender our personal “opinions” and focus on God’s heart during our discussions, leading us to understand and support others.  It allows us to live wisely so that we positively impact others.

I pray we consider the words from Marc Wong, Listening is the art and practice of putting someone else’s speaking, thinking and feeling needs ahead of your own. It is deliberate and thoughtful, not contrived or self-serving. It fosters emotional and intellectual reflection. It is an art, because it involves more than mere technique, and because it is very much about the communication and affirmation of feelings.”
